Olive Cookie Treats

Client: Olive Green Dog Products
Over the course of the past two years, Modern Dog has worked on everything from website design to direct mail to packaging for Austin based Olive™, makers of “Green Goods for Modern Dogs”. Pictured above are the organic, handmade, all natural Cookie Treats (no wheat, corn or soy – no artificial colors, no artificial flavors and no preservatives of any kind). We named the products, did all the copy writing and of course designed them as well. Scrummy for your best friend’s Tummy.

I’m Not Gay, I Just Really Love Rainbows

Client: Blue Q
From 2006 – 2007 Modern Dog developed a line of “Not Gay” products for Blue Q. One of the design inspirations came from Hawaiian rainbow bumper sticker designs from the 1980′s. Modern Dog’s own Robert Zwiebel designed and wrote all the copy too. From the Blue Q website, “why should homosexuals have all the fun? Rainbows aren’t private property”. PS: May also be used by homosexuals BUT ARE NOT GAY.

Sticks and Stones Water Bottle

Client: Blue Q
The high price of bottled water is not the water but, in actuality the cost of the bottling, packaging, shipping, marketing, retailing and transporting it all over the globe. When calculating your carbon footprint, you might want to consider picking up an eco-friendly Blue Q “Sticks and Stone” wide mouthed water bottle. Plastic water bottles pile up like mountains of waste. In 2008, about 40 million bottles a day went into the trash, or even more unfortunately became litter. These billions of bottles take up valuable landfill space, leak toxic additives into the groundwater and take a whopping 1,000 years to biodegrade, if ever. We are proud to be a part of Blue Q’s latest product line of ultra light weight, easy-to-clean and reusable bottles. (The wide mouth makes it easy to add ice cubes too!) Our design incorporates natural, organic shapes and lines that radiate a meditative quality. Constructed of food grade stainless steel and printed with lead-free inks the bottles are also much better for your health too. What sweetens the deal? Blue Q donates 1% of the sales to support global clean water initiatives. See the entire line of custom water bottles at BlueQ.com.

Blue Q: Gums 2009

Client: Blue Q
These tiny gum boxes pack a wallop. This past Spring 2009, Modern Dog was commissioned by Blue Q to design 14 new gum products, and we’re ready to do some show and tell. We named some of the gums (ie Instant Asshole, Cotton Mouth, Fuck it, That’s so Gay, etc). and wrote much of the supporting copy with lots of help from Blue Q copy writer Kelley Lear. Bonus visuals are tucked inside each box. It was a long, painful process with constant back and forth – going from fun to frustrating and horrific then back again – but always a satisfying finish. Because almost all of the art direction was spot on, we couldn’t be happier with the results. Look for them at your favorite specialty boutique soon.

Know-It-All Breath Spray

For the authority who knows everything there’s “Know-It-All” Breath Spray. The “Mighty Smart Mint” flavored breath spray packaging contains expert advice on child rearing, common cold remedies, refrigerator repair and emergency protocol. With additional support copy by Know-It-All designer Michael Strassburger. Brought to you by the purveyors of pop culture, Blue Q.

Kealas Hawaiian Coffee

Client: Kealas Coffee
Our client Sean Lee grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii. Sean is the primary roaster for Kealas, roasting beans in small batches right here in Seattle. We’ve developed packaging that captures both a Hawaiian feel and a high-end independent coffee roaster feel. This package helped Sean get his beans onto the shelves of Whole Foods. The grocery store chain likes to feature as many locally made products as possible, and we couldn’t be happier for Sean. You can buy the beans direct from his website too. Visit his website (we also designed that) or next time you are in Whole Foods in the Pacific Northwest, ask for Kealas Coffee by name.

Mott The Hoople CD Packaging

Client: Shout! Factory
Mott the Hoople were an English rock band well known for being a part of the popular glam rock scene of the mid-70′s. The lead singer/songwriter, Ian Hunter, continued on for many years as a solo artist. This compilation is the only one to cover both phases of Ian Hunter’s legendary career. Shout! asked for an illustrated solution, and because Ian’s hair and glasses are so iconic, that’s were we started. You can check out the project’s progress on the Shout! site. This 2-CD set features Mott the Hoople’s notorious hit, “All the Young Dudes” written by their fan and friend, David Bowie – which was also featured in the soundtrack of “Juno”. (While going to college in Bellingham, Mike and Robynne were big fans and used to play MTH on their radio shows in the mid 80′s.)

Go Intercourse Yourself

Client: Blue Q
Our longest client relationship has been with Blue Q – 15 years and counting. As you can see, we are quite comfortable collaborating with them and coming up with fun products. The idea for this project came out of a phone conversation Mike had with Mitch when he blurted out “Go Intercourse Yourself!” Two days later the product files were delivered to Mitch. (Mike is really proud of the two lion crest. You’ll have to get up closer to understand that his 8th grade sense of humor is in full swing).

Cat Butt Products

Client: Blue Q
To date, the best selling Blue Q magnet, car air freshener and gum package is Cat Butt. Developed in 2001 when Blue Q head honcho Mitch Nash asked Modern Dog to do something funny in the pet department – with either dogs or cats. Having been a proud cat owner in the past, Mike naturally came up with this idea and did the naming, art direction and design for the entire line. Furry, fun and friendly, the product line has been a pop culture phenomena profiled in numerous magazines and newspapers around the country while netting Blue Q well over a million dollars in profits with no end in sight. The products have been spotted as far away as Japan, Mexico and Norway, and it’s a good example how our “low brow” humor crosses over into many different cultures. Someone even told us they saw them in an episode of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”. We make commission on the Cat Butt products so we are very happy too. The line also includes coasters, stickers and raspberry sour candy which includes a “Handy Cat Butt Glossary” written on the back of the package.
